Russian and Soviet
Studies was merged with Russian and Slavic Studies in 1997. The
Committee on Russian and Soviet Studies includes Frederick Kellogg
(History), Beth Mitchneck (Geography and Regional Development),
John Olsen (Anthropology), Douglas Weiner (History), John
Willerton (Poitical Science).
The Russian and post-Soviet studies emphasis within the program
leading to a BA in Russian provides courses in the many
disciplines involved in the study of Eastern Europe, Russia and
other states of the former Soviet Union. By choosing a
curriculum with this emphasis, students will prepare themselves
for careers in government, academia, and business. Students will
have a capstone project in their senior year. For specific
requirements and options, please contact the department.
Although not required for the major, a number of classes in area
studies, the humanities and the social sciences are recommended as
introductory courses for Russian and Soviet studies majors. The
minor in Russian and Soviet studies consists of 21 units of course
work chosen from the following departments: Geography and Regional
Development, History, East Asian Studies and/or Near Eastern
Studies, and Political Science. A list of courses considered
suitable for the minor is available from our undergraduate advisors.
A Russian and East
European Studies emphasis is now available for MA students who
wish to take courses in history, political science, geography, and
anthropology. Please consult with the Graduate Advisor,
John Leafgren. |
