The Teresa Polowy Memorial Scholarship Award honors Dr. Teresa Polowy, professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Arizona. During her twenty-five years of teaching at University of Arizona, Dr. Polowy worked with countless students, fostering interest and passion in Slavic languages and cultures. A pioneer in the fields of Russian literary studies and gender analysis, and an innovative teacher and inspiring mentor, Dr. Polowy encouraged her students to challenge themselves and actualize their potential. The Russian and Slavic Studies Department at University of Arizona, along with countless friends and colleagues, honors Dr. Polowy’s legacy and the impact she made on our field and on the lives of those she knew through the Teresa Polowy Memorial Scholarship Award for undergraduate students.
Who Can Apply?:
The Teresa Polowy Memorial Scholarship Award provides money for University of Arizona tuition for undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Arizona who will be continuing in the University of Arizona in the next academic year and who have taken at least one course in Russian language, literature or culture at the time of their application. $500 dollars will be awarded to a well-qualified student.
The 2016 application deadline is 4:00pm on March 10.
Applications consist of a complete student application dossier (click through on Scholarship Title, scroll to bottom for complete Scholarship Packet). The student application dossier should be submitted to the Teresa Polowy Memorial Scholarship Coordinator, Holly Lysne (email@example.com, 3rd floor of the Learning Services Building).
The student application dossier should contain the following materials:
1.A completed cover sheet (click through on Scholarship Title, scroll to bottom for complete Scholarship Packet).
2.A statement of purpose: This is a typed essay in English of 800 to 1000 words in length. The essay should be in Times New Roman 12 point font and should be double-spaced. It must be signed and dated by the applicant. In your essay, explain your purpose(s) for studying Russian language, literature, and culture and how this study fits into your intellectual interests, academic plans, and plans for life after graduation.
3.University of Arizona transcript (unofficial campus copy is acceptable) and transcripts from any other colleges or universities attended after high school graduation (official copies for transcripts from other institutions)
4.Two letters of recommendation: Recommenders must submit a completed copy of the Teresa Polowy Memorial Scholarship Recommendation Form with their letter (see below). Both letters of recommendation must be submitted to the Teresa Polowy Memorial Scholarship Coordinator [Holly Lysne, firstname.lastname@example.org, 3rd floor of the Learning Services Building] by the 4:00pm March 10 deadline. Recommendations must be submitted in sealed envelopes, with the author’s signature over the seal. For all applicants, at least one of the recommendations must be from a faculty or staff member in either Russian and Slavic Studies (RSSS) or Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) at the University of Arizona.
The Teresa Polowy Memorial Scholarship award selection committee will consider all the information in the application dossier and the recommendations and will give preference to those who have taken RSSS 328, or have demonstrated active interest in the area of women in Russian literature in some other way, and who have declared a major in Russian and Slavic Studies (RSSS). Awards will be announced in early April.
