About the holiday: International Women’s Day celebrates women’s economic, political, and social achievements.  Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended the culture of many countries, primarily in Europe, especially those in the Soviet Bloc. In honor of the holiday we will watch Девчата (The Girls, 1961), a popular Soviet romantic comedy.

About the film: Девчата is set in an isolated Russian logging camp, c. the late 1950s. A pig-tailed young girl - Tosya (Nadezhda Rumiantseva)- arrives from school with a cooking degree, and joins a group of other women who work in jobs supporting the loggers. When a young heartthrob, Ilya, starts flirting with Tosya she takes it as a true romance.  She comes to learn that his show of affection was part of a bet with his friends to seduce her.
